The exact requirement depends on whether you are an Indian national or an international traveller, and on how close your route goes to borderland or restricted areas. Because these rules can shift, we always confirm the latest requirements when a route and dates are fixed.

State by state
Arunachal Pradesh is the state most travellers ask about first, and it is the one where permits most often matter. If you are looking at routes such as Road to Tawang, Watershed of the Brahmaputra or Arunachal Unravelled, expect permit planning to be part of the trip.
