Permits for Northeast India

What travellers usually need for Arunachal Pradesh and beyond

Overview

Permit rules vary by state, nationality and route

Not every trip in Northeast India needs a permit, but some of the most rewarding regions do. The most common questions usually come up around Arunachal Pradesh, though travellers also ask about Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur.

The exact requirement depends on whether you are an Indian national or an international traveller, and on how close your route goes to borderland or restricted areas. Because these rules can shift, we always confirm the latest requirements when a route and dates are fixed.

The guide below is meant as a planning overview, not a substitute for final route-specific confirmation.

State by state

Where permits matter most

Nagaland

Nagaland can also involve permit considerations, especially on routes linked to culture, festivals and more remote hill areas. If Nagaland is part of a wider route such as Tribes of the East or Hornbill Express, we guide the process as part of the planning.

Mizoram and Manipur

These states can also have permit requirements depending on traveller nationality and route details. They are less common on the current core set of journeys, but where they are included, permit handling becomes part of the route setup.

Assam and Meghalaya

For most standard routes, Assam and Meghalaya are usually simpler from a permit point of view. That is one reason they work well for first-time visitors or families comparing route options.

Practical guidance

What to keep in mind before you book

Do not assume one rule applies to the whole region. Northeast India is made up of different states with different permit histories, border sensitivities and administrative rules.

Nationality matters. Indian and international travellers are not always subject to the same permit process. Group composition can also affect how a route is planned.

Remote routes need closer checking. The more your journey moves into frontier valleys, high roads, border districts or rainforest access zones, the more important it is to confirm details route by route.

We handle the route-specific part. Once you decide on a journey, dates and group, we confirm what is needed and guide you through the paperwork that applies.
