Questions before you travel

Frequently asked

Planning your Northeast India journey

When is the best time to travel in Northeast India?

October to April is the main travel season for most of our cycling, walking, family, culture and motorcycle journeys. Some routes work outside this window, but monsoon months can affect roads, trails, rivers and visibility. You can see currently scheduled options on our fixed departures page, or read our fuller guide to the best time to visit Northeast India.

Do I need permits for Arunachal Pradesh or other states?

Yes, some areas require permits, especially Arunachal Pradesh. Requirements vary for Indian and international travellers. We guide you through the permit process once the route and dates are confirmed. If you are comparing routes first, start with our Arunachal Pradesh tours.

How fit do I need to be?

It depends on the tour. Some holidays are relaxed and family-friendly, while cycling, trekking and motorcycle routes can involve long days, climbs, rough roads or remote terrain. Each tour page gives a broad level, and we can adjust private trips around your group. For example, compare the easier pace of our Assam Family Holiday with the more demanding Road to Tawang.

Can tours be customised?

Yes. Many of our journeys can be shortened, extended or adjusted around interests such as cycling, walking, wildlife, culture, food, family travel, photography or festivals. A good place to compare route styles is our main tours page.

What is included in the tour cost?

Inclusions vary by tour, but usually cover accommodation, local transport, guiding, support crew, many meals and activity arrangements. Fixed departure pages show the published price, while private tours are quoted after we understand the group size and route. You can see current scheduled prices on our fixed departures page.

How remote are these journeys?

Some tours stay close to towns and established routes, while others enter remote valleys, borderland areas, rainforest, high roads or villages with limited services. We plan logistics, support and pacing accordingly. For more remote examples, see Namdapha Rainforest Trek or Road to Tawang.

How do I book or start planning?

Use the contact section or email us with your preferred dates, number of travellers, travel style and any tour you are interested in. We will help shape the best route from there. If you are still deciding, browse destinations in Northeast India first.

Local accommodation in Northeast India Stays

Accommodation

As much as possible, we keep accommodation local for both authenticity and sustainability. Instead of large hotel chains, our first preference is smaller, locally owned establishments. The further we travel from the usual tourist places, the fewer choices there may be, but we ensure clean, hygienic accommodation with character.

Meals

The communities of Northeast India have a great variety of cuisines. As far as possible, we prefer local fare, usually rice-based with greens, meat and fish. We also understand the need for comfort food on multi-day active journeys and plan accordingly. Meals are freshly cooked, nutritious and made with fresh local ingredients whenever possible.
