If you are planning a first trip to Northeast India, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are often the three most useful starting points. They connect well, but they do not offer the same experience.
Assam is usually the easiest for variety and comfort. Meghalaya works beautifully for walking, hill landscapes and shorter active routes. Arunachal Pradesh is usually the choice for travellers who want stronger remoteness, bigger landscapes and a more demanding journey.

Assam is usually the most forgiving choice for first-time visitors who want a bit of everything: wildlife, tea country, river landscapes, culture and gentler active days. Meghalaya is ideal if you are drawn to green hills, root bridges, village walks, waterfalls and shorter active journeys. It feels compact and atmospheric, and it is often the best state for travellers who want walking without stepping into a full expedition model. How to decide
